Take a look at our 3rd grade teaching team! Ms. Powell is our student teacher from Illinois State University and she is fearlessly guided by master teacher, Mrs. Deluhery, and supported by the rest of the team including Mrs. Coile, Ms. Campbell, and Mr. Askins. Although she is home with her newest job of mothering two tiny twins, Mrs. Juchems (not pictured) is dearly missed in the third grade. This is a resilient team who are honest and trustworthy and this shines through in their students who are often identified as leaders in the building because their hard work, determination, and kindness. Third grade is a great place to be!

Yesterday, Kenzie Stiltz paid a visit to Miss Nieuwkoop's 1st grade class to read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. She also stayed to teach the class about the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which she had read with her own class. Kenzie used her Raider tickets to buy a pass to read to a class. She chose to come read to her little brother Karson. Great work Kenzie!!

Greetings from our 2nd grade team of Ms. Charlton, Ms. S. Waddell, Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Schmidgall. This team supports students in taking their newly formed first grade skills into a solid foundation before the end of each year. Preparing students for third grade and beyond is a huge feat and this team does it in style with hands on learning and deep units of study focusing on real life problems and solutions. The type of study in 2nd grade also promotes massive social and emotional growth at this age! This team is a retired 60+ in their teaching age and their expertise shines through daily!

Our special education department stands firm on their beliefs that special education is a level of support, not a place! Mrs. Pullum, Ms. Swearingen, Mrs. Gough, Mrs. Herrin, and Mrs. McDaniels live this out daily by making sure all students have learning opportunities in the general education setting. This team not only support students with academics but are able to provide levels of support for students in social settings as well supports to general education teachers to work as a team to meet the needs of all students in all settings. MCPS has a knowledgeable and committed group of special education leaders!

"We are Raiders" Greetings to our first grade teaching team of Ms. Davis, Ms. Marshall, Mrs. Bohm, and Ms. Nieuwkoop. This grade level team keeps our building lively and fun, bringing an energy to their classrooms and students. There is always an active project going on in first grade as this age of students requires that energy, hands-on instruction, and movement to increase their learning. While this may be our "youngest" group of public school teaching experience, this team leads through innovation, energy, and patience and we rely on this team to keep us having fun! They also have a very important task of being a bridge from Kindergarten to second grade... and that's no small task!

"We are Raiders!" Meet the academic intervention team including Ms. Ropp, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Whitford, and Ms. Kleckner. These four gems bring their specialty knowledge of reading and math instruction to small groups or individuals who have not reached their potential yet. And that is just it, the power of "yet". With the support of this team, students are able to overcome difficulties in reading and math and transfer their skills into their daily classroom instruction. These ladies also provide MCPS teachers with support in their classrooms through team teaching and professional development on a monthly basis. Together, we are better!

"We are Raiders!" Meet the Kindergarten teaching team of Ms. Dorsey, Mrs. Koontz, Mrs. Charlton, and Mrs. Stout. These teachers get the pleasure of taking students who are new to the district and starting them on their educational journey AND leading our current Preschool students to the next level in their education. Most students enter Kindergarten knowing a couple letters in their names and leave Kindergarten reading books...that is some growth! With a combined 45+ years of experience, most of which was spent in Kindergarten, this is a team of early childhood development experts and Midwest Central CUSD 191 is so grateful to have them!

We are proud to introduce to you our student support team! MC Social worker, Ms. Ranallo, spends a majority of her time at MCPS providing social and emotional support, self regulation tools, whole group social instruction, family supports, and a valuable part of our PBIS team. Mrs. May is our district School Psychologist who guides our student support teams in assessment and then finding or developing tools to support individual students with their academic, behavior, or both! Mrs. Frank, our district Speech and Language Pathologist, supports our students through assessing individual speech and language needs and finding tools to help students communicate and learn as independently as possible while teaching teachers new strategies to support those individual needs as well. This team provides a whole child approach to language, behavior, socialization, and academic progress and we could not do public education without them!

We are building Raider pride at MCPS with our January motto "We Are Raiders!" Along with spotlighting our students throughout the day, we want to spotlight our staff as well. Please join us over the next two weeks in getting to know each group of staff. We're starting off with the Preschool Team: Ms. Lawson, Ms. Forsythe, Mrs. Wood, and Mr. Waibel! They meet our students at their doors each day to welcome the littlest humans to the building. In their classrooms they work first on guiding students to learn social skills through play and build in academic instruction in a relaxed environment. This includes social skill building with peers and adults to set the little Raiders up for success in navigating their future K-12 experience. These 4 teachers bring a combined 50+ years of early childhood development knowledge through daycare, Head Start, and school employments!! We are lucky to have these teachers in our preschool for all classrooms at Midwest Central CUSD 191!

Hello Raiders, The first snow or winter weather event always seems to stir up the excitement that school may be cancelled. We pride ourselves on student safety; however, that has to be balanced with the fact that we live in central Illinois, and it does snow and get cold in the winter months. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I try make decisions on weather events based upon whether I’d want my own children driving or attending school on those days. I also personally drive roads in our district to make my decisions. With our district residing in two different counties, it’s important to understand that one county may plow roads in time for school while another may choose to wait. All these factors go into making the best decision possible for students and staff. Granted it’s never perfect. In general, if I can’t drive a small call on the roads we’re going to cancel. It’s important to remember that snow is much easier to deal with than ice. Our buses cannot operate safely on ice, but they do fine in minimal snow. The other factor to consider is how cold it is outside. Finally, if we do need to cancel school, I will send out a call/text message. If you’ve not been getting our messages, please make sure your phone number is correct in TeacherEase or call our offices to confirm. We’ll post on our Facebook pages and do our best to contact local television stations as well. Because our buses start early, we will always aspire to cancel before 5:30 AM. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to navigate the Illinois winter weather. As the saying goes…if you don’t like the weather today…wait until tomorrow. Sincerely, Todd Hellrigel
